10 Tips to shoot "aqua" surf photography

I've found it interesting to share about the subject of aquatic surf photography because it can be very difficult for a beginner to know how to start shooting waves and surfers. So here it is, you got your new waterhousing but you're a bit lost. Try this :

1- If you want to shoot really close to the surfer and waves, choose a wide lens (8mm to 16mm)

2- Put small desiccant bags inside the housing (as find in shoes box) to avoid steam on the glass

3- Clean the outside front glass of the housing with a peeled potatoe to minimize water drops while shooting

4- Examine CAREFULLY the spot where you want to shoot : Is there currents ? Where does the wave break ? Where should i get out ? What's the best area along the wave ? How will I get back in ? ...etc

5- Wear a helmet for security and to signify your presence to the surfers

6- Use powerful flippers (bodyboard fins are the best)

7- Use a small leash for your housing

8- Don't get in the surfers way ! If you feel you're in the wrong position, just dive and don't shoot. Generally try to stay close to the side of the wave, especially if you're a beginner.

9- Know your limits.

10- Be friendly with everyone (including other water photographer!)

This is, of course a non exhaustive list of tips concerning water surf photography. Feel free to comment this blog and bring your knowledge to the table. Don't forget to click on "follow this blog"
